LINDA YOSHIZAWA

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Linda Yoshizawa lived for three years in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and then five years in Honolulu, Hawaii. She currently reside in San Ramon, California. After graduating from Pomona College in Claremont, California with a BA in studio art, Linda joined a workshop in Los Angeles and created editions of silkscreen prints from 1979 to 1983. She is now returning to printmaking after taking a leave of absence for thirteen years. Linda joined the Lafayette Printmaking Workshop, run by Sherry Smith Bell, in 1997 and is exploring new techniques to produce monotypes, monoprints and collage.

Linda's artwork reflects the mixing of two cultures - Japanese and American. Using sketches from nature as a reference, she creates a monotype by painting the shapes in oil onto a plexiglass plate. She then rolls over the oil with water-base ink using a brayer. The image is then transferred onto printmaking paper on an etching press. Often the prints are cut and then collaged together to form a composite image. The etching press records even the most subtle brushstroke and there is an innate beauty in this. Linda uses collage because it allows her to be free in the printing process. She can select and arrange the separate pieces into the final image.
