ROSWITHA KRESS

Born and raised in Germany, Roswitha Kress has extensively studied art both in Germany and in the San Francisco Bay Area. She works in oil, charcoal, conte crayon, colored pencil and printmaking. Roswitha's paintings and monotypes have been accepted into local, national and international juried shows and received numerous awards. Her work has been published in the San Francisco Chronicle and has been used for posters and brochures for local organizations and companies in Germany.

Roswitha describes her work as being, "focused on the human figure and the local landscape. Buttery oil colors, vibrant soft pastels, deep, rich charcoal, all help give shape to my observations. I am particularly fascinated with using the often unpredictable monotype printmaking technique as a springboard for the placement of the human figure.

The urge to discover what my hand together with my inner voice can create through thin or thick marks and bright or somber color captivates and excites me again and again. To touch paper or canvas with pen or brush is a mysterious voyage, like my finger drawing lines on a frosty windowpane: suddenly I see what was hidden from view."
